My Story

When I gave birth to my oldest son 18 years ago, I had what I can only describe as a transcendent experience. I felt loved and cared for beyond measure, surrounded by people who were exclusively focused on supporting me and my baby. That included my husband, my mother, my best friend, and my doula.

Before getting pregnant, I had no idea what to expect from childbirth, and I certainly didn’t know what a doula was, but I did inherently recognize that I would want and need support—and I sure did. 30+ hours of labor will do that to you! I have always credited my doula with helping me avoid a Cesarean section, and now we have hard data that backs that up.

After my first child’s birth, I found myself eagerly asking people to tell me their birth stories, in full detail, marveling at the range of experiences. Fast forward about 15 years and I was fortunate enough to be present with one of my best friends during her labor and delivery. I got to witness her doulas in action and see all of the wonderful ways they supported her. After her baby was born, one of her doulas hugged me on her way out and whispered in my ear, “Have you ever thought about becoming a doula? You’d be great!”  The short answer was yes, I had been thinking about it, and this was the encouragement I needed to take the next step.

Anytime I take a personality test, my results come back with descriptors like “the cheerleader” and “the advocate,” and while no personality test is perfect, these descriptions are pretty on-point for me. My friends and colleagues describe me as warm, supportive, positive, thoughtful, empathetic, and a good listener. Whether with a client, a friend, or someone I’ve just met, I love to hear about people’s lives and I love to do what I can to help them feel comfortable, content, and confident.

I’ve been living in Durham, North Carolina, for almost 17 years with my husband and our two sons, plus an array of cats, chickens, and a dog. I love to cook, read, and expand my skills in the garden.

Before becoming a birthworker, I worked for nearly 20 years in international health and development, collaborating with governments and non-profits in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean to improve the quality of health services. I speak French fluently, and Wolof (a language spoken in Senegal, West Africa) conversationally. And, lucky for me, I can sleep almost anywhere, anytime, which makes traveling across oceans—or working a postpartum night-shift—more than manageable.
